Education Committee

Informing educators about the significant cultural and natural features that characterize the Papago Salado region has been an important aspect of the Association's work since its inception.

In 1996, an Arizona Heritage fund grant enabled the Association to develop Getting There with Heritage, a set of lesson plans that teaches about the prehistoric and historic resources found in the area. The following year, the Association received additional grant funding to conduct in-service workshops to introduce this curriculum to teachers.

To formalize the Association's commitment to educational programs, a standing committee was organized in November 1999.

The Education Committee brings together staff from the Education and Programs departments of the Association's member organizations and representatives from allied groups. The focus of the committee's work has been to explore possibilities for collaborative efforts to provide information to teachers, students and the public about the history people, plants and animals of the region and desert environment.

With the assistance of the Arizona Humanities Council, a needs assessment for teacher training was conducted in 2000. The Education Committee is currently working to implement the findings of this study.
