Aesthetics and Transportation Committee

The Aesthetics and Transportation Committee has over two dozen members from a wide array of municipal departments including parks, planning and redevelopment, grants, public works, transportation and public arts programs plus representatives from the Cities' related citizen boards an commissions. Participants also include landscape architects; planners; historians and designers.

Initially the work of the Aesthetics and Transportation Committee focused on planning to improve the linkages among the region's attractions and destination points and to ensure a high aesthetic quality for the improvements made. Some of these projects were sponsored directly by the Association; others were done in partnerships with other organizations or involved Association representatives on review bodies.

Early efforts included the 1995 Papago Trail Concept Plan, the "Design Concepts for the Papago Trail" from the Walking into the 21st Century Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Road Show, the 1998 Papago Green Line MAster Plan and updates of master plans for the Phoenix and Tempe Papago Parks.

During 1999-2000, the Aesthetics and Transportation Committee assisted in the development of the Papago Cross Cut Canal Master Plan. An initial segment of the plan was constructed in 2001 jointly funded by the City of Tempe and the Bureau of Reclamation. Additionally, a companion project has identified public art opportunities and other potential aesthetic enhancements along the Papago Trail.

An important illustration of this work is the public art component to be constructed as part of the 2.25-mile trail segment along the Cross Cut Canal in Tempe. The public art programs of the three cities funded the initial public art master planning for the region.

The Committee's future work plans include the publication of an updated map of the Papago Trail, designating the Papago Trail on the Arizona State Trail system and identifying means to complete additional trail segments and improvements.
