Hohokam Experience Summer Programs
Week 1: July 9-12, 2007
Playing with Clay the New Mexican Way #28544
Participants will learn about pottery of the New Mexico Pueblos. They will stone polish, fire and decorate their own piece of pottery in the traditional way as well as learn how pottery making has developed over time.
Week 2: July 16-19, 2007
Petroglyphs and Pictographs: Lets Rock! #28545
Explore the techniques of rock art! Participants will learn how to use GPS technology, document and record rock art sites to understand how to preserve these unique markings. We will also examine the science of Archaeoastronomy and how it relates to rock art. Students will visit a rock art site at South Mountain to put their skills to the test.
Week 3: July 23-26, 2007
Jewelry of Ancient Cultures #28546
From the people of the Southwest and Mesoamerica, to the ancient Egyptians and tribes of Africa, self adornment was a common practice for people throughout the world. Discover what types of materials and techniques were used to make jewelry and have a chance to make some of your own.
Week 4: July 30-August 2, 2007
A Week in the life of a Hohokam #28547
Have you ever wondered what life would be like in prehistoric Arizona? Come and find out what the Hohokam people did to survive and thrive in this Arizona desert. Participants will construct a Hohokam village, learn how to make shell jewelry, learn to throw an atlatl (spear) that was used to hunt for food and so much more!
